Icom IC-120 is working here with V.29 9600bps modem, for radio TCP/IP.
Since the squelch response is slow, I pick up directly detected signal
for demodulation and use squelch only for disabling TNC from sending.
This eliminates the delay caused by squelch.

Subject: tapr.org as "unknown host"?
When Tuscon Amateur Packet Radio were using the "tcet.unt.edu" return
address, I subscribed to their lists. Now, they use "tapr.org". I am
still getting their interesting bulletins but cannot respond to them. My
e-mail, addressed to the "tapr.org", bounces back. TAPR.ORG is declared
as "unknown host" by several servers. I sent this question to sombody at
tcet.unt.edu but have received no response. So what I need is a
numerical IP address of tapr.org.

There is no IP address associated with TAPR.ORG, just an MX record that
points to:
tapr.org. 23212 MX 10 dptspd.sat.datapoint.com.
If you email addressed to tapr.org bounces, then your SMTP mailer is
just plain broken.

What you need is a mailer that understands MX records. There is no A {address}
record (and one isn't needed).

TAPR.ORG is an MX record. If you are using NOS on AMPRNET you must set
'smtp usemx on' This assumes you are using an internet (or internet
served) domain server.
In general you should set have this set to on BUT it will take longer
since each resolve must be done at least twice. Once to see if an MX record
exists and again to find an 'A' record. Since this is only done for
mail, and that is not realtime, who really cares.
If you are using wa3dsp or a JNOS version that has 'domain resolve'
(I think K2MF does also) you can check these things BEFORE you try
to send mail.
domain resolve ucsd.edu where.I.want.to.go [mx]
This would check the ucsd, edu domain server for the type of record
requested. If non is added, like mx, then it looks for 'A' records
If you check for 'A' reocrds and get a host unknown then check for
an MX. Also use the closest server to you in place of ucsd.edu if you
can.

Hope this helps... (Note: no linux box is like mine... :-))
---------------------------- this is from /etc/rc.net:
/bin/hostname dc6iq
/bin/domainname ampr.org
# connect to wampes
if [ -f /etc/wampes.dip ]
then
dip /etc/wampes
sleep 2
/sbin/route add -host 44.130.29.3
/sbin/route add -net default gw 44.130.29.3 metric 2
fi
---------------------------- this is /etc/wampes.dip:
main:
get $local dc6iq
get $remote dc6iq-w
port ptysf
speed 9600
loggedin:
get $mtu 260
done:
print CONNECTED to $remote
mode SLIP
goto exit
error:
print SLIP to $host failed.
exit:
---------------------------- this is the beginning of /tcp/net.rc:
#
# do this sleep !!! kernel opens master pty, wampes must come up later
shell "sleep 3"
#
ip a 44.130.29.3
hostname dc6iq.ampr.org
ax my dc6iq-5
#
# "radio port"
#
att asy 0 ttyS2 kissui ttyS2 2048 236 38400 44.130.29.3
#
# "kernel port"
#
att asy 0 0 slip ttysf 2048 2048 9600 44.130.29.3
#
Instead of using dip, you might want to take "slattach" which also
does the job.
